RIP JEFF ROTH
In 2006, Jeff Roth was, first and foremost, a father of three little girls ages 5, 5, and 7 year old, a husband. He was a Physical Therapist by career. He exercised voraciously every day, rode long distances on the roads 5 to 6 times per week and especially loved steep hills.

One August afternoon, Jeff was riding on Rt. 321 in Maryville, Tennessee and was hit and killed by Mr. Tommy Carroll who was driving a pick up truck. Local cyclists Matt Alexander, Mike Winck and Jay Nevans worked with Tennessee Rep. Doug Overbey to put together a bill to protect cyclists and educate motorists through the Jeff Roth Protection Act. The bill passed unanimously through the House and the name Brian Brown was added to the bill at the Senate level. Brian was killed when he was struck by a truck near Martin, Tennessee. He was a friend of Tennessee Sen. Roy Herron. In Spring of 2007, the bill was signed by Governor Phil Bredeson.

Jeff's death brought the local and state cyclists together and the Jeff Roth Cycling Foundation was formed. Our foundation will strive to promote safe cycling and motorist education of the Jeff Roth and Brian Brown Protection Act.

Bicycle Protection Act
The Jeff Roth and Brian Brown Bicycle Protection Act of 2007 was signed into law on May 3, 2007, by Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen. Tennessee joins a handful of states that have moved forward to further protect cyclists on our roadways.

Passed without opposition in both the House and Senate, this act provides that "the operator of a motor vehicle when overtaking and passing a bicycle proceeding in the same direction on the roadway, shall leave a safe distance between the motor vehicle and the bicycle of not less than three feet (3') and shall maintain such clearance until safely past the overtaken bicycle." A violation of this section is a Class C misdemeanor.

horrible accident, I was at the scene shortly after. Driver of a flatbed truck for the lumberyard near intersection failed to properly secure cargo to bed, causing a piece of lumber to slide loose after turning onto street. The wood stayed on the trailer, and angle itself in such a way that struck the chest of a middle age male driver of a incoming pickup truck. The truck came to rest on its own in the middle of Sheridan near 13th street. The small pickup truck driver had already passed by the time I arrived, while the flatbed truck driver stood by his own truck, not helping. The image will forever be etched into my memory. Always be careful at this intersection, and watch for any unsecured lumber from the nearby business.

John Martin, 46, of Elgin died Tuesday, December 20 in an automobile/pedestrian accident in downtown Austin. A service to celebrate John’s life was held on Wednesday, January 4 at 11:00am at Marrs Jones Newby Funeral Home, 505 Old Austin Highway, Bastrop.

John was a special person in many ways. His parents, Joe and Sonia Martin, loved him very much but trusted his care to his aunts, Anna Kossoff (Stan) and Paula Minyard Todish (Robert Minyard-Deceased & Bill Todish).

He also had loving cousins who considered him a brother - Brian Minyard (Judy), Troy Minyard (Laura), Terrell Epperson (Jill), Wendy Valentine (Mike), Mark Epperson, Christine Jones (Donald), and Gary Epperson.

John also had two beloved cats - Logan and Sweetie Pie who he treated like children more than pets. They will be cared for by Paula. John was a long-time employee of the State who took pride in excelling at his work and providing excellent customer service.

AUSTIN, Texas (FOX 7 Austin) - Monday night a bicyclist was hit and killed in a collision with a CapMetro bus. He has been identified as 39-year-old Anthony John Diaz, to FOX 7 Austin he was known just as Tony.

Tony Diaz was a longtime FOX 7 Austin employee who worked in operations but wore many hats at the station.

He worked behind the scenes on all of our newscasts, but particularly Good Day Saturday and Sunday and our evening weekend newscasts.

Tony’s co-workers know him as someone always ready to step in and help.

Tony was a Navy veteran and worked on the Armed Forces Network in Italy and San Diego. He attended the Defense Information School at Fort Meade and was an honors student at Austin Community College.

We can tell you, Tony loved cheeseburgers and the Kansas basketball program.

Tony is survived by an Aunt in Austin. Our heartfelt condolences go out to her, his other family and his friends.

AUSTIN, Texas (FOX 7 Austin) - Sandra Riley is Tony Diaz's aunt. She says when her nephew moved to Austin they connected. "We just really clicked, we were a lot the same. He was very reserved and introspective and interested in important questions of life like 'Why are we here?' 'What's the right thing for me to do?'" Riley said.

Tony and Sandra were actually roommates for a couple of years. "He was a great roommate, he was wonderful and helpful and quiet and he could cook good things to eat," Riley said.

After finishing a shift at the FOX 7 studio in downtown Austin, Tony hopped on his bike Monday night.

UT Police say he was riding northbound on San Jacinto near 23rd Street.

A Capital Metro bus, also going north, was behind Tony when the two collided.

He was trapped underneath. Just 39-years-old, Tony died at the scene.

A detective from UTPD came to Riley's door. "I just sat there and said 'How could that possibly be?' It's mind-altering and even now when I drive I'm more careful," Riley said.

To us here at FOX 7, Tony was a great guy.

"One day he got up the courage to try working at FOX," Riley said. Since 2012, Tony has been one of the many good people behind the scenes who make the newscasts possible. "He had learned a lot about sound and lighting and equipment and that type of thing when he was in the Navy. He was in the Navy for 4 years," Riley said.

With a smile on his face and a headset on his head, Tony would floor-direct the weekend shows. "He loved challenges and appreciated the opportunity to do something he enjoyed doing," Riley said.

Sandra says she visited him at the station. She says he enjoyed being the man behind the camera.

Those of us who worked with Tony knew him as a patient, calming force in a fast-paced environment. "It was just his personality that he didn't get upset over small things he just could ride with the flow," Riley said. Outside of work he loved bicycles. In fact, Sandra says he built one from scratch.

"He was very interested in exercise and health and running, oh he loved to jog. He would run for like 10 miles or something at a time like it was nothing," she said.

This week, Sandra has had the tough responsibility of bringing Tony's things from his apartment including pictures of his time in the military, of his friends and family including the foster parents who raised him into the man he became.

As for the investigation into how Tony's life was cut so tragically short, Sandra says it's important to get those answers. "Of course yeah from what I've heard it doesn't sound like just an ordinary accident. Sounds like there was more that was happening," Riley said.
